Genealogical Information Service Approximately one Icelander in five emigrated to North America between 1870 and 1914, so almost every Icelander alive today has relatives on the other side of the Atlantic. It is not surprising that an initiative that provides a central point of contact and information would be welcomed by Icelanders and overseas visitors alike. Eager for knowledge about their ancestry and fascinated by tracing back their roots, they are delighted to find the Center’s genealogical and information services at their disposal. Using computer and print resources, the staff at the Center are able to search for Icelandic ancestors by specific request. In many cases staff have helped to restore contact between relatives generations after it had been lost. Particular emphasis is placed upon promoting friendship and cultural links with the descendants of the Icelandic emigrants.
